Country & City

Armenia is a small landlocked country in the South Caucasus, bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran. Yerevan is the capital and by far the largest city — historic, walkable, and known for pink volcanic-stone buildings (the "Pink City"), wide boulevards, and views of Mount Ararat on clear days.

The country uses the Gregorian calendar and is predominantly Christian (Armenian Apostolic Church) — Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, in 301 AD.

Visa: for EU passport holders, entry itself is visa-free for stays up to 180 days — no separate visa needed. See the passport section below for required travel documents.
🛂

Passport & Entry Documents — Important for All Players

⚠ Passport required — ID card is not enough. Armenia is outside the EU, so a German Personalausweis is not valid for entry. Every player and staff member needs a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the arrival date.

Don't have a valid passport, or is it expiring soon? Apply immediately and check current processing times at your local Bürgeramt — if there's not enough time, apply for a vorläufiger Reisepass (provisional passport) instead, which can usually be issued the same day.
NationalityDocuments required
EU citizens & Brazilian nationals Passport or provisional passport — valid at least 6 months on the day of entry
Bosnian & Serbian nationals Passport or provisional passport (valid at least 6 months on entry) + German residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel, valid at least 6 months on entry)
💵

Currency & Money

The local currency is the Armenian Dram (AMD). Euros and US dollars are not generally accepted for everyday payments — always pay in Dram.

  • Roughly 1 EUR ≈ 400–420 AMD (check current rate before travel, this fluctuates).
  • Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan (restaurants, hotels, taxis via app), but carry cash for small vendors, markets, and some taxis.
  • ATMs are common around the city center — withdraw Dram directly, avoid airport exchange counters (worse rates).
  • Tipping: not obligatory, but ~10% in restaurants is appreciated and increasingly standard in touristy areas.
🔌

Power & Plugs

Armenia uses 230V / 50Hz — the same standard as Germany. Sockets are Type C and Type F (standard round two-pin European plugs).

Good news: your German chargers and devices work without an adapter. No voltage converter needed.
🗣️

Language

The official language is Armenian, written in its own unique alphabet (not Latin or Cyrillic). Russian is widely understood, especially by older generations. English is common in Yerevan's hotels, restaurants and among younger people, but less so outside the city center.

SIM & Connectivity

EU roaming plans generally do not cover Armenia (it's outside the EU roaming zone) — check data costs with your provider before arrival, or:

  • Buy a local prepaid SIM on arrival (Ucom, Viva-MTS, or Team Telecom) — available at Zvartnots Airport and shops in the city, cheap and easy with a passport.
  • Wifi is widely available in hotels, cafés and the venue.
🩺

Safety & Health

Yerevan is generally considered safe for travelers, with low rates of violent crime. Standard travel precautions apply (watch belongings in crowded areas, official taxis only).

  • Tap water in Yerevan is generally safe to drink — the city is famous for its many public drinking fountains ("pulpulaks").
  • No special vaccinations required for entry from Germany. Standard routine vaccinations recommended as always.
  • Pharmacies (Ապրանք/Դեղատուն) are widely available and well-stocked.
  • Emergency numbers: 911 (general emergency) or 112.
Note: Armenia shares borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey where regional tensions exist. Yerevan itself is unaffected and calm — this is a general awareness note, not a travel warning for the city.
